Missions
Wintergarden Presbyterian Church, Port Charlotte (one of Peace River Presbyterys smallest congregations) is very aware of the need to support local and national mission projects. As part of the greater connectional church we financially support the 2 Cents a Meal, the annual Souper Bowl, One-Great-Hour-Of-Sharing and Christmas Joy Offerings. Wintergarden holds 2 garage sales a year to help support our mission giving. Our other mission offerings are varied and offer opportunities to members of the congregation to be involved as much as they desire or are able. A group of dedicated crafters have been making ditty bags [small, cloth, purse-stringed bags] to send with Medical Missionaries who travel the world to give medical care to the poor and destitute. The ditty bags are given to patients as a clean method for carrying home medications, bandages, glasses, etc. as some of them must walk miles for treatment. We involved the wider congregation by having everyone participate in decorating the ditty bags with textile pens during a monthly Friendship Dinner. To date, over 900 bags have been made and sent off with Medical Missionaries. Other mission projects include the making of blankets for the Linus Project, the collection and recycling of greeting cards and soup can labels and peanut butter and jelly drives to supplement food dollars for the seniors in our community. This past Spring Break, Wintergarden members financially sponsored several college students who came down to work during their vacation with Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte County for a week.
